Your home’s drainage system is just as important as any other part. By conveying rainwater, sewage, and other liquid wastes from your home to the point of disposal, this system maintains healthy conditions in the building. Therefore, you must make sure that the drainage system is functioning as it should.
Unchecked drainage issues can seriously damage your home. The damage will, in turn, cost you a lot of money in an attempt to fix it. Luckily, drainage systems give off telltale signs when they are not in their best condition. Noticing these indicators early and taking action will make a world of difference. Therefore, call your emergency plumber is you see the following signs in your home;
1. Water stains in your basement or foundation
Where these stains show up will tell whether the problem is a serious one or easy to solve. If the water stains sit high up on the foundation wall, the water is coming from outside the house from surface runoff or an overflowing gutter. In this case, the drainage issue is not a big one and is easily solved by unclogging a drain or checking the soil around your home’s foundation for any standing water.
Nonetheless, if the water stains form a continuous line in your basement, then the problem is a serious one. This situation may be caused by a fluctuating water table, causing water to leak into your home or city storm drains that back up inside your house.
2. Cracking foundations
Small cracks and fissures in your foundation are a familiar sight. Nonetheless, if you notice big cracks or gaping holes and an uneven floor, your foundation may fail. The widening cracks indicate a drainage problem, and as the water settles in them, they get bigger. This puts the whole of your home at risk and should be dealt with immediately.
3. Standing water in the yard
It’s normal to see pools of water in your yard after rain. Nonetheless, if these pools remain in your yard a few days after the rain has stopped, you might be facing a drainage emergency. A proper drainage system should allow the water to run off your property. Therefore, these pools of water may be an indication of a leaking pipe below the surface of your yard.
4. Overflowing rain gutters or sewer
If your gutters or sewer overflow when it rains, you may be facing a build-up of leaves and debris. The clogs won’t be that much of a problem and can be easily fixed. Nonetheless, an overflowing sewer may also indicate incorrect installation, which cannot be solved by guttering. If this is the case, you need a professional to replace your sewer before the next downpour.
5. Your home smells like mildew
If you’re facing mould in your home, it could be from above or below. Accumulated moisture because of roof leaks from above will cause mould to grow on the ceiling or surrounding walls. Mould around the floor area may be due to water pooling underneath your home due to improper drainage.
